Auditory Brainstem Response Testing in Ottawa & Kanata
Auditory Brainstem Response testing, also known as ABR, is an advanced audiological test that measures how sound travels from the ear through the auditory nerve and brainstem pathways.
At Ottawa Hears Audiology, ABR testing is performed by our Doctor of Audiology as part of a specialized assessment when more detailed information about hearing and auditory pathway function is needed.
What Is an ABR Test?
ABR testing records the hearing nerve and brainstem’s response to sound. Small sensors are placed on the skin, and soft clicking or tone sounds are presented through earphones.
The test does not require you to respond or press a button. You simply relax while the equipment measures the auditory pathway’s response.
It may be helpful for:
✅ Asymmetrical hearing loss
✅ Sudden or unexplained hearing changes
✅ Auditory nerve or retrocochlear concerns
✅ Tinnitus with unusual hearing findings
✅ Difficulty obtaining reliable behavioural hearing results
✅ Monitoring auditory pathway function
✅ Medical referral or specialist-requested testing
✅ Additional information before referral to ENT or another physician
Why ABR Testing May Be Recommended
What to Expect During the Appointment
During your appointment, we will review your hearing history, symptoms, and reason for testing. Small sensors will be placed on your skin, usually on the forehead and near the ears. Sounds will be played through earphones while you relax quietly.
ABR testing is non-invasive and does not hurt. For best results, you should remain calm, still, and relaxed during the test.
